Colony eBook Max Florschutz

Overall I thought Colony was a great read and recommend giving it a shot. The Colony has a slower pacing, especially at the start, but that pacing picks up a lot in the latter 3rd of the novel, more on the pacing later in the review.

Story:
This story is part sci-fi and part mystery with a bit of action, adventure and a intrigue thrown into the mix. The progression of the story is clean and well laid out. Max doesn't hand hold and lead the reader by the nose through the developing mysteries either. The clues are all there, but they aren't completely explained till the characters all put them together. Part of the fun I have with stories like this is seeing if I can put the clues together before the characters can assemble them.

Characters:
The is definitely an ensemble cast story. All of the characters are well developed and each have their own distinct voices and personalities. By the end of the story, while I was really interested in what was happening, I found myself really pulling a lot for the characters themselves, and just had to know what would happen next to them.

Pacing and Action:
There are more than a few places where Colony had me on the edge of my seat unable to stop reading, but the story can be a bit of a slow burn. At first it was the unfolding mystery that really kept me reading. Colony starts slow but always moves forward steadily snowballing into a very fast paced climax as it goes. The action is well written and easy to follow. Speaking of the action another of Colony's strengths is how the characters react to the action and violence around them. These are human beings and they all react to the events they find themselves ensnared by in very human ways both emotionally and physically.

Colony eBook Max Florschutz Reviews

An enjoyable Gibson-esq cyberpunk story that feels like it belongs in the annuls of Shadowrun. I like that the "hard science" the characters can understand is explained and the over-complicated science is sort of glazed over with equal confusion to the characters.
Wow!
It's a bit hard to write review without spoiling the story.
I will just say that expected it to be good, but did not expect it to be so good.
Totally worth it!
The book has full fleshed characters and unpredictable! plot which it still consistent.
Worldbuilding is strong, even if the story universe is a bit grim (though not bad enough to describe it as dystopia).

I cannot wait for the sequel!
I enjoyed Colony very much! I'm a sucker for sci-fi books in general and this one did not disappoint. I loved the characters and world-building, and was glued to my pretty much all weekend. At 330k words it's a long read, but it held my attention the whole time. Looking forward to whatever Mr Florschutz publishes next!
An action packed sci-fi adventure filled with excellent, detailed world-building, Colony is a treat for any lover of sci-fi. I'm looking foward to reading the sequel once it is released.
Quite a good story, with one or two disappointments. Wonderful characters, interesting world (both future earth and the space colony we see), but the big climax at the end was a little disappointing and the pace in the middle was a bit slow for my tastes. Really looking forward to the next book though! I loved the characters, so want to read more stories with them in it.
My son (one of the reviewers mentioned in the acknowledgements) tried to forward his copy for me to read, but the transfer wouldn't take. I decided, on his recommendation, to purchase because I'd read two of Max's previous works and was impressed by his rich imagination and characterizations. And I was not disappointed with this work - quite the opposite, actually. Besides thoroughly enjoying every page of this really thick book (if it was printed paper, of course), I finally got to see a setting where Star Wars and Robotech flight physics could actually make sense (well, kinda...).
Max Florschutz is now in my "read everything this guy writes" category.
Wow.

I finished this book just a few days ago, and it took me that long to let all of my thoughts on it coalesce. There's a lot I want to say, but that would mean spoilers, and this is not a good place for those.

I will say, however, that this story is absolutely fantastic on multiple fronts. The world it takes place in is a captivating, expansive, yet dark and mysterious one, crafted with immense attention to detail and imagination. The characters we experience this world with are just as well-rounded and intriguing as the setting, and the plot of the story is a journey that will leave you guessing and hungry to read more.

"Colony" was one of the more memorable reads I've had recently, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who appreciates quality science fiction with a lot of action.

Can't wait for the sequel!
